Celebrate Tu Bishvat with The Neighborhood and Brooklyn Children's Museum as we learn about the Jewish holiday of the trees!

All day long, we'll be featuring performances, workshops, songs, stories, and more all across the museum.

Together we will:

Taste the four kinds of fruit associated with Tu Bishvat!
Hear songs and stories about the holiday from Tkiya
Read aloud tree stories with PJ Library
Explore Jewish folk herbalism with Adamah
Experience sensory play and storytelling
Learn about reducing your food waste

Featuring

Ari Monts

Ari L. Monts/Emet is a faculty fellow at SVARA Yeshiva and the co-rosh yeshiva of Yeshivat Gadol v’Kadosh. A Brooklyn-based writer/scholar/zine maker/ritualist/ba’al tefilah/organizer/teaching artist, Ari’s work engages with participatory rituals and affect, rigorous playfulness, pleasure, and access. Emet is a Storahtelling-trained artist, a SVARA Teaching (Cohort 5) Fellow, and a 2021 ALEPH Kesher Fellow. They can talk non-stop about the powerful work of learning in chevruta, memes, the book they half-read last year, and their cat, Anya.

Jenny Romaine

Jenny Romaine is a director, designer, performer and puppeteer. She is co-founder/artistic director of the OBIE winning Great Small Works visual theater collective and music director of Jennifer Miller’s CIRCUS AMOK. Romaine teaches/ directs in theaters, schools, parks, libraries, museums, prisons, universities, street corners, and other public spaces, producing work on many scales, from gigantic outdoor spectacles with scores of participants, to miniature shows in living rooms. Jenny was a sound archivist at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research for 13 years and for several decades has drawn on Yiddish/Pan Jewish primary source materials to create art exploring diaspora consciousness. She founded the Youth Theater Workshop at Klezkamp, The Sukkos Mob (featured in the film Punk Jews), community Purim Shpiln with the Aftselakhis Spectacle Committee, and more. She is currently a lead artist with Naming The Lost Memorials and was the first recipient of the Adrienne Cooper Award for Dreaming in Yiddish (2014.) Jenny is featured in Dazzle Camouflage: Spectacular Theatrical Strategies for Resistance and Resilience, a monograph by Ezra Berkley Nepon.

Lars Montanaro

Lars Montanaro (he/him) is a multi-disciplinary artist from the California mountains. He is a founding member of Chicken Big, an experimental comedy troupe (UCB, iO, Annoyance, Asylum NYC, Brooklyn Comedy Collective), and worked as the director of The Poetry Brothel NYC, an immersive poet-theatrical experience. His work has been featured at La MaMa ETC, PhysFest NYC, SF Sketchfest, Chicago iOFest, Oberlin College, The New School & NYU, and he has recently performed and developed projects with HERE Arts Center, En Garde Arts & The Center at West Park. He is trained in Meisner from the Terry Knickerbocker Studio and is currently pursuing an MFA in Contemporary Theater & Performance at The New School.

Lulu West

Lulu West is an NYC-based composer, improviser, songwriter and educator. Her music is guided by rural queer and trans histories as she looks to create experiences of communal healing. Lulu is specifically fascinated by how folk melodies, field recordings and ambient drones can merge with the freakiness of harsh noise, hardcore, power electronics and experimental found-sound sampling. A natural product of this work has resulted in making performance art that physically challenges trans bodies. Lulu’s main collaborative projects consist of a folk/classical guitar duo project entitled Polsky West, a noise rock trio called DUCHESS, and a free-improv duo with percussionist Paul Sakai.

Murphy Severtson

Murphy Severtson (they/them) is a performance artist, composer, and teaching artist. Their art is fascinated by religion, traditions, queer and trans joy and despair, climate change, Florida, women, crustaceans, breath, repetition, and care. This art is often sung, accordion-ed, and improvised.

They are a member of Mirage Auto Depot, was a founding member of the Mosaic Composers Collective, and often write and perform with George Landau-Pincus.

Murphy works as a teaching artist at the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers Program, Little Orchestra, and Opera on Tap. Their music has been performed by the Rhythm Method, the International Contemporary Ensemble, and the St. Olaf Band, at Lincoln Center, the Dimenna Center, and National Sawdust.

Sarah Chandler

Sarah Chandler is a Brooklyn-based Jewish educator, artist, activist, healer, and poet. She teaches, writes, and consults on issues related to Kabbalistic dreamwork, earth-based spiritual practices, mindfulness, and farming. As the CEO of Shamir Collective (shamircollective.org), she advises high-profile and emergent musicians and authors on self management, fundraising, and long-term planning. She co-authored the recently published book "Expanding the Field: A DIY Rosh Hashanah Companion."
