Artist Working Groups
Artists and culture-makers create deep wells of collective and individual power as the storytellers of our contemporary world. Artists occupy an important role as leaders in the Jewish community and broader civic life. Supporting artists in diverse ways leads to a richer and more vibrant Jewish world that encompasses the multiplicity of Jewish experiences. Supporting Jewish and Israeli artists in diverse ways leads to a richer and more vibrant understanding of Jewish life that encompasses the multiplicity of Jewish experiences. The Neighborhood’s Artist Working Groups program was established in 2022 to nurture and support an intergenerational, multi-disciplinary, artistic community in the larger New York City metropolitan area by giving artists a Jewish space of creation in Brooklyn.

Each season, artists across diverse disciplines meet to create a network of support, receive professional development, and delve into the Jewish aspects of their work, facilitated by experienced Jewish cultural professionals. The third cycle of the New York Jewish Artist Retreat and Artist Working Groups will start in April 2026 with a cohort of 30 artists. Structured as an interdisciplinary research group, the two-day retreat will be followed by three research sessions in May and June. The group will dive into the historical and contemporary facets of Jewish life in Brooklyn, concentrating on culture, art, activism, and community building, and meet with experts from different fields, developing projects which will be presented in a public event in November 2026.
