Welcome to Sukkot in The Neighborhood– a week-long festival of arts, culture, and spirituality taking place in an art installation Sukkah at the Ring Community Center at Luria Academy of Brooklyn.

This year’s Sukkah installation is multi-disciplinary artist Gili Avissar’s Ushpizin: Guest and Ghost. The structure is constructed using vibrant, abstract flags made by Avissar that were originally flown in the heart of the old city of Jerusalem, creating a visual language that weaves many different cultures together.

The holiday of Sukkot emphasizes hospitality, commanding the construction of a temporary, outdoor space in which guests partake in shared meals and rituals. The Aramaic term ushpizin refers to guests, sometimes real and sometimes otherworldly, who are invoked and welcomed into the Sukkah space physically or symbolically.

This Brooklyn Sukkah is open to all, and has something for everyone: art, ritual, live music, learning, family events, and more.

Gili Avissar

Gili Avissar is a multi-disciplinary artist, born and based in Haifa. Avissar combines disciplines such as painting, sculpture, video, performance, and dance in his work. The materials used—textiles, ropes and plastic—evoke associations with recycling. Occasionally, however, the sculptures take on the function of wearable costumes when activated by actors or the artist himself. This reveals the objects’ transformative power, for they become a kind of vessel absorbing and surrounding the body when the actors slip into them, creating a safe “exploration and learning zone” (Gili Avissar).

Avissar received a BFA and MFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem.
